Lombardi Does It Again! Scores in SO to Give Griffins Best Start
Red Wings prospect Amadeus Lombardi continues to be there when the Grand Rapids Griffins need him.
The former Flint Firebirds standout was named the game’s No. 1 star after he netted the only goal in a shootout to give the Griffins a 4-3 win. He also had an assist on the tying goal with 1:50 left in regulation. The Grand Rapids’ has goalie was pulled. The team’s 6-1 record marks the best start in franchise history.
Lombardi has four goals and six points, plus a shootout goal in seven games this season. He has taken advantage of Marco Kasper’s promotion to the Red Wings recently.
Carter Gylander, making his AHL debut, generated 33 saves and stopped three consecutive shootout attempts to earn the win. Gylander is probably No. 3 on Detroit’s prospect goalie list behind Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine.
Former Vancouver Canucks forward Sheldon Dries scored a pair of goals for Grand Rapids, and Detroit prospect Cross Hanas netted his second goal of the season. Detroit tough guy Austin Watson, likely to get some games in Detroit, picked up his sixth assist of the young season.
The Sunday triumph gave Grand Rapids three consecutive road wins over three days. It’s the first time the Griffins have won three road games in three days since 2002.
The Griffins have only given up 11 goals in their first seven games. They are tied for first place with the Milwaukee Admirals (6-1). Grand Rapids provided the Nashville Predators’ farm team its only loss on Cossa’s 3-0 shutout.
Grand Rapids’ next game is Wednesday, on the road, against Hartford.
Very nice article. Thanks.
If his nickname isn’t “Wolfgang” then I don’t know what to say.

They call him Ammo but I vote for Wolfgang.
