Red Wings vs. Jets: Notes, Lines, Goalies, How to Watch

Olli Maatta, Red Wings

The Red Wings complete the first month of the season today,  playing host to the red-hot Winnipeg Jets at LIttle Caesars Arena.

The Jets had won their first eight games of the season before suffering their first loss. That came Monday night, when the Jets lost 6-4 to Toronto.

The Wings are coming off an overtime loss to Edmonton on Sunday, getting a point in an Eastern Conference race that may prove as congested as any in recent memory.

Detroit goes into the game without Olli Maatta, who was dealt to Utah for a draft pick  Tuesday night.

Winnipeg comes in with goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who played his high school hockey in the Detroit area. He won the Vezina Trophy last season and is making a case for a repeat in the early going, with a  6-1 record, a 2.14 GAA and .925 save percentage. Those numbers took a hit in Monday’s loss, but are still impressive.

The Jets also feature a lethal power play, converting on a jaw-dropping 44.7 percent of their chances thus far this season. The Red Wings have the third-worst penalty kill in the NHL, which could be a factor tonight.

Alex Lyon will start in goal. Tyler Motte (upper-body injury) is skating but not yet ready to play.
