PITTSBURGH — Simon Edvinsson scored the first game-winning goal of his career in overtime Wednesday night, lifting the Detroit Red Wings past Pittsburgh, 3-2.

Edvinsson took a pass between the circles from Alex DeBrincat and beat Alex Nedeljkovic 90 seconds into the extra period. It was his second goal of the season. Patrick Kane also had an assist.

Cam Talbot got the win in net, the 250th of his careerl, turning aside 32 of 34 shots. Twelve of them came off the sticks of Evegeny Malkin and Sidney Crosby, who  had six shots apiece. The key, he said, was patience.

“You can’t anticipate anything with those guys,” Talbot said in a postgame interview on TNT. “As soon as you try to anticipate what they’re going to do, they’re world-class for a reason, and they’re going to make you pay. So I tried to stay as patient as possible on those guys.”

Asked if the Wings were desperate to get a win, Talbot emphatically agreed.

“Extremely desperate,” he said. “You can tell by the way we played tonight and the way we’ve been playing. We finally got rewarded putting some pucks in the net. It was so nice to come out of here with a big two points for the start of the road trip.”

The game featured two teams looking to find a groove. The Red Wings were looking to jump-start their slumbering offense (31st in the NHL), while the Penguins were coming off Monday’s 7-1 loss to the Dallas Stars, who scored six goals in the first period of that contest.

Red Wings score first

The Red Wings got things going after the teams played to a scoreless first period.

Jonatan Berggren scored a minute into the second period, taking a pass from Vladimir Tarasenko and beating  Nedeljkovic. It was Berggren’s first goal of the season.

A little over four minutes later, Kane scored a power-play goal, his third overall, to give the Wings a 2-0 lead. Lucas Raymond, who has just one goal this season, had an assist,  his team-leading 13th of the season

The Penguins tied it in the second half of the period on goals by Bryan Rust (his fourth) and Anthony Beauvillier (his fifth).

Before the game, the Penguins honored  Malkin on his 500th career goal, which he scored last month. He has 503 for his career, all with Pittsburgh.

The Red Wings continue their road swing this weekend, with games at Anaheim Friday, at Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon and at San Jose Monday.
