Former Red Wings goalie Michael Hutchinson is joining SaiPa of Finland's SM-liiga.

Goaltender Michael Hutchinson came to Detroit Red Wings camp last season without a contract. The veteran netminder would end playing for the team.

Now, he’s playing for a new team on the other side of the hockey world.

Hutchinson was attending New Jersey’s camp on a PTO, was left without a contract offer. Without a North American pro opportunity this season, Hutchinson is joining SaiPa of Finland’s top pro league, the SM-liiga.

“We are very excited to have an experienced goalkeeper like Michael as part of the team,” SaiPa’s sports director Harri Aho said in a statement. “Mike is known for his hard work ethic and sportsmanship, which we will certainly need in the rink in the future.

“As a player, he also has a lot of experience in leading and mentoring younger players.”

Last season, Hutchinson came to Detroit’s camp on a PTO. He would earn an AHL deal with the Grand Rapids Griffins. When the Red Wings were suffering a rash of goalie injuries in December, the team was signing Hutchinson to an NHL contract. He would get the start Dec. 23 at New Jersey, suffering a 3-2 loss to the Devils.

The Red Wings were Hutchinson’s sixth NHL club. In 32 games with the AHL Griffins, Hutchinson was 14-14-3. He was showing an .892 save percentage and 2.89 GAA.

Former Red Wings Goalie Reimer Shuffling Back To Buffalo

Speaking of ex-Red Wings goalies, James Reimer is once again a mmeber of the Buffalo Sabres. Reimer signed a one-year, $1 million pact with the Sabres as a UFA in the summer. However, he would be claimed on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks.

When Anaheim tried to get Reimer through waivers earlier this week, Reimer was again snapped up by the Sabres.

Last season, Reimer was 11-8-2 in 21 games for Detroit with a 3.11 GAA and .904 save percentage.
