The Red Wings are summoning defenseman WIlliam Lagesson from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, the team announced on Monday.

Well, this news doesn’t bode well for Detroit Red Wings fans who were hoping to see Simon Edvinsson back in the lineup for Monday’s game at San Jose against the Sharks.

The Red Wings are recalling defenseman William Lagesson from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. They wouldn’t be asking him to travel cross country for this game is the club was healthy on the back end.

Edvinsson was missing from the lineup Saturday as Detroit was falling 4-1 to the Los Angeles Kings. The top pairing defender took the warmup but the determination was made that he could not go in the game. He left Friday’s 6-4 loss to the Anaheim Ducks after blocking a shot with his knee.

Orginally, Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was expressing optimism that Edvinsson might be available for Monday’s game. Now it would appear that is unlikely.

The sudden summoning of Lagesson also makes it entirely possible that another member of the Detroit defensive corps is also ailing.

Newest Red Wings D Has Played 100 NHL Games

Lagesson was signed by Detroit as an unrestricted free agent last summer. While he’s yet to play for the Red Wings, he does hold a fairly significant resume of NHL experience.

The Swedish blueliner has played 100 NHL games. That includes a 40-game stint last season split between the Toronto Maple Leafs (30) and Anaheim Ducks (10). Lagesson has accounted for 11 assists as an NHLer, as well as a plus-two rating.

He’s also played 57 games for the Edmonton Oilers from 2019-22 and eight games for the Montreal Canadiens in 2021-22, during which he was a teammate of current Red Wings defensemen Jeff Petry and Ben Chiarot. He was originally chosen 91st overall by the Oilers in the 2014 NHL entry draft.

Lagesson has five points (2-3-5), 12 penalty minutes and a plus-10 rating in 11 games with the Griffins this season. His plus-10 rating is tied for second among the league’s defensemen and tied for third among all skaters.
