The NHL hasn’t been able to stop the Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin in his enthusiastic pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s league goal scoring record.

But a lower leg injury has brought it to a full stop at least temporarily.

Ovechkin, 39, is out “week to week” with the injury suffered Monday on a collision with Utah player Jack McBain. The Capitals superstar had to be helped to the bench, and appeared to be in pain when he tried to skate during a stoppage in play.

Ovechkin has another meeting with doctors today for further evaluation of the injury.

Prior to suffering the injury, Ovechkin was scoring goals at an impressive pace. He already has a NHL-leading 15 goals, including five in his last two games.

He now boasts 868 goals, leaving him needing 27 to break Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals. That record was once considered close to unbreakable. With the way Ovechkin was scoring, it looked like he had a shot this season.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Bob Duff writes about what lies ahead for Detroit as it plans to play five of its next six games at home. Goalie Cam Talbot says the Red Wings can’t “hang our heads” about the ugly road trip (0-2-1).

Everyone’s fingerprints were on the poor performance in California. But the lack of goals from Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrick Kane, J.T. Compher and others have become a major problem.

Dmitri Buchelnikov is making a case to be considered one of the top Red Wings prospects.

Defenseman William Lagesson was returned to the Grand Rapids Griffins. With Simon Edvinsson hurting, Lagesson was recalled. But Lagesson never played. The Red Wings (7-9-2) return to action Thursday at home against the New York Islanders. Meanwhile, the Griffins (11-3-1) are preparing to play the Iowa Wild in Grand Rapids Friday and Sunday.
