The Daily: Red Wings Prove They Can Win Tight Games; Trade Rumors

As inconsistent as the Red Wings are this season, if they keep a game close they have found a way to win that contest or at least earn a point.

Detroit downed the New York Islanders 2-1 Thursday to raise their record 4-0-2 in one-goal games.  Bob Duff’s DHN story points out how important that win was after a crushing California trip.

“Of course we needed one,” Coach Derek Lalonde said. “I thought we hung in there. That’s a tough team to get offense on, especially when the goalie looks like he’s zoned in, which he was tonight.”

Lyon has given up one goal to the Islanders in two appearances this season. He shut out New York in October.

By the way, the Islanders are coached by Patrick Roy. He was the Red Wings archnemesis when he was playing goalie for Colorado years ago. The Red Wings had success against him as a goalie, but are having even more now that he’s a coach. Detroit is 6-1-3 against teams coached by Roy.

Coach Derek Lalonde’s team desperately needed a win and Jonatan Berggren and Lucas Raymond delivered it.

Detroit offers Pavel Datsyuk one-day contract to allow him to retire as a Red Wings player.

Detroit’s situation does not get easier. The team plays its next game Saturday against a Boston team coming off a 1-0 shutout against Utah. It was Joe Sacco’s first game as Boston head coach. He succeeded Jim Montgomery who was fired because of the Bruins’ sluggish start. Meanwhile, the Grand Rapids Griffins (11-3-1) are home tonight against the Iowa Wild.
