Red Wings Notebook: Tarasenko Finding Shooting Range

One of the bright spots for the Detroit Red Wings in Sunday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks was that forward Vladimir Tarasenko was scoring his second goal in as many games. Prior to his tally on Friday against the New Jersey Devils, Tarasenko was goalless since Oct. 19.

“It was a big goal,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said of Tarasenko’s fourth goal of the season. At the time, it was giving Detroit a 4-3 lead.
“Obviously, we had some momentum from the power-play goal (by Michael Rasmussen to make it 3-3) and then scoring right after. Obviously gave us the lead in third.”
The third line of Marco Kasper between Tarasenko and Jonatan Berggren was accounting for two goals and four points.
Red Wings Fail To Preserve Talbot’s Record
A lower-body injury was forcing Red Wings goalie Cam Talbot to leave the game in the second period. The loss was forcing the NHL to erase Talbot’s name from the record book.
Vancouver goalie Kevin Lankinen was improving to 12-3-2 on the season and also to 10-0 on the road during the 2024-25 campaign. That’s the most consecutive away wins by a goaltender to start an NHL season in league history.

Coming into Sunday’s game, Lankinen was among three goalies with a share of the mark. Last season with the Los Angeles Kings, Talbot was winning his first nine games of the season. In 1965-66, former Red Wings goalie Glenn Hall won the first nine road games of the season for the Chicago Blackhawks.
From Spits To Stripes
Mitch Dunning was one of the two referees assigned to Sunday afternoon’s game by the NHL. Back in 2009-10, Dunning was a defenseman with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires.
His coach was current Red Wings associate coach Bob Boughner. Among Dunning’s teammates on that Spitfires team was current Grand Rapids Griffins forward Austin Watson.
Ice Chips
Counting a pair of assists on Sunday, Vancouver defenseman Quinn Hughes now has 28 points on the season. The entire Red Wings defensive corps has accounted for 37 points thus far during the 2024-25 campaign . . . The Detroit penalty kill surrendered a pair of power-play goals while two men short early in the second period. That’s five power-play goals allowed over the club’s past two games.
