The Daily: Walman’s Strong Start in San Jose; 2018 Draft Regret

Published

Jake Walman, Red Wings

Former Red Wing Jake Walman was dealt to San Jose last summer, but has settled in nicely already in his new Bay Area home.

Walman. who had 21 points in 63 games in Detroit last season, has 19 already this season for the Sharks.

It could be one of those deals that comes back to haunt the Wings, who were seeking to get some space under the salary cap.

It certainly stands out this season, especially with a Red Wings offense that is among the weakest in the NHL

But that’s the thing with trades; Some work out, some don’t. Only time will tell.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

The Red Wings had a chance to draft a top defenseman in the 2018 draft, but went with forward Filip Zadina instead.

Zadina is out of the NHL, playing in Switzerland, while three defensemen whom the Wings passed on are playing very well, indeed.

As the Red Wings continue to struggle, so does speculation that Derek Lalonde’s tenure as coach may end soon. But it’s not as cut and dried as it seems.

The Grand Rapids Griffins (13-5-1) suffered a rare loss on Saturday, falling at Chicago 5-2. The Griffins lead Milwaukee in the Central Division by four points. They’re home tonight against the North Division-leading Cleveland Monsters, who have won their last 10 games in a row.

Red Wings Extra

Remember a couple of weeks ago, when Lucas Raymond was leading the Red Wings in points but had only one goal?

That’s not an issue lately, as Raymond took a five-game goal-scoring streak into Sunday’s tilt with Vancouver.
