Detroit Red Wings
Who’s In Goal? Red Wings Don’t Know
It’s always felt that the Detroit Red Wings season was one Cam Talbot groin pull from going off a cliff.
Now we’re going to find out if that really is the case.
With 13:22 left in the second period of Detroit’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday afternoon at Little Caesars Arena, Talbot was seen gliding slowly off the ice and heading straight to the Red Wings dressing room. He wouldn’t return to the bench.
Cam Talbot will not return. Lower body injury. #LGRW

The diagnosis? A lower-body injury.
Talbot is 6-5-2 with a 2.73 goals-against average and .915 save percentage this season for the 10-12-2 Red Wings.
Ville Husso took over between the pipes and the Canucks wound up tagging him for the loss. Husso was only in the lineup because Alex Lyon is out with a lower-body injury.
Detroit coach Derek Lalonde was already indicating that Lyon wasn’t going to to be available for the club’s upcoming road trip to Boston (Tuesday) and Ottawa (Thursday).
So if Talbot is out long-term, who will be sharing the net with Husso for the foreseeable future?
“I don’t know, honestly,” Lalonde frankly admitted. “We’ve had two goalies go down in the past week. This one was obviously a little bit not surprising, but it’s . . . I have no idea what our goaltending situation is going to look like. Have a better idea in the morning.”
Red Wings Goaltending Situation Bleak
Actually, if Talbot is going to be out for any length of time, we think deciphering Detroit’s goaltending situation is pretty straightforward. And it isn’t pretty.
Go ahead and take a look through the options.
Husso is without an NHL win since December 12, 2023. He’s lost his last seven NHL decisions. This season, Husso is 0-2-1 with a 4.90 goals-against average and .818 save percentage.
Jack Campbell is just back from a stint in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program. Since clearing NHL waivers and being given assignment to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, he’s seen no game action. Campbell was backing up for the Griffins on Sunday as they were playing the Cleveland Monsters.
Campbell’s last NHL win was on October 17, 2023. He’s 1-4 in his last five decisions with an .873 save percentage and 4.50 GAA.
Will It Be Cossa Time?
There’s always an outside chance that come Tuesday at TD Garden, the goalies for the Red Wings could be Huss and Coss. Sebastian Cossa has been carrying the load for the AHL Griffins.

The netminder who was Detroit’s 15th overall selection in the 2021 NHL entry draft is still awaiting his first appearance in The Show. However, this season he’s 8-4-1 with a .929 save percentage and 2.06 GAA for the Griffins.
If it should turn out that Talbot will be gone for a significant length of time, the Red Wings may have no choice to make their goalie of the future their goalie right now.
