Big Day To Be Red Wings Goalie Prospect

Cossa might not see any NHL action

Monday was a big day to be a Detroit Red Wings goaltending prospect. But it might not be as big as it was originally appearing for Sebastian Cossa.

Getting the recall from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins on an emergency basis, 2021 first-round pick Cossa was practicing with the Red Wings on Monday. How much – if at all – he’ll be seeing in terms of game action while in Detroit is a factor that remains entirely up in the air.

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was announcing Monday that Ville Husso would be getting the start Tuesday at TD Garden as Detroit faces the Boston Bruins.

“Tomorrow was going to be a scheduled Husso start no matter what happened yesterday,” Lalonde said. “We’ll get through tomorrow with Ville’s start and re-evaluate for Thursday and have a better feel for where Cam (Talbot) is at, too.”

Talbot left in the second period of Sunday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks due to a lower-body injury. While the Wings are definitely ruling out Alex Lyon (lower-body injury) from any role on Tuesday, the same can’t be said for Talbot.

“Hard to say,” Lalonde was suggesting. “Obviously, optimistic in the fact he was able to get an extra 2-3 minutes after tweaking it and then walking around today. But he’ll get an image of it (Monday) and we’ll get a better feel.”

Cossa May Not Play For Detroit On Trip

It’s entirely possible that better feel might mean Talbot suiting up as Husso’s backup in Boston, and Cossa simply heading back to GR without seeing any NHL action.

“We’ll see where the health of our goalies are on whether we get him in the net soon,” Lalonde said.

That might not necessarily be a bad thing. Last season, the Minnesota Wild were rushing top goalie prospect Jesper Wallstedt into a spot start. He was lit up for seven goals. The Buffalo Sabres were recently returning Devon Levi to the AHL Rochester Americans. The 23-year-old was enduring his difficulties at the NHL level.

Red Wings Prospect To Play For USA

USA Hockey was announcing the preliminary roster for the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championship on Monday. Not surprisingly, 2023 Red Wings second-round draftee Trey Augustine was front and center.

He’s been the goalie for the team at the past two world juniors. Augustine was winning a gold medal last year and a bronze medal the year before.

Goaltender for the 11-1 Michigan State Spartans, they are currently the No. 1-ranked team in the NCAA. Augustine is a big reason why. He’s 9-1 with a 1.70 goals-against average and .938 save percentage.
