The Red Wings are recalling goalie Sebastian Cossa from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Sebastian Cossa has long been viewed as the goalie of the future for the Detroit Red Wings.

As of Monday morning, that future is now. The Red Wings are recalling netminder Cossa from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions.

Detroit is in need of goaltending help. Number one puckstopper Cam Talbot was leaving Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Vancouver Canucks due to a lower-body injury. Backup Alex Lyon is out, also with a lower-body injury he was sustaining in practice last week.

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was previously indicating that Lyon wasn’t going be available for this week’s road trip to Boston (Tuesday) and Ottawa (Thursday).

The calling up of Cossa likely means two things. Firstly, Talbot is going to be on the shelf for some time. Secondly, the decision is making it entirely evident that the Wings aren’t putting much faith in their two healthy goalies with NHL experience, Ville Husso and Jack Campbell.

Neither has won an NHL game in almost a year. Husso’s struggles to remain healthy are well documented, so relying as the team’s go-to goalie was going to be problematic for Detroit.

Campbell only recently was returning from a stay in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program. He’s yet to see any game action this season.

Cossa Carrying Load For Griffins

Cossa is proving to be a workhorse for the Griffins and he’s been delivering the goods. In 14 games – third among AHL goalies – Cossa is 9-4-1 with an impressive 2.21 goals-against average, stellar .925 save percentage and one shutout.

Only two AHL netminders are showing more time between the pipes than the 816:02 logged by Cossa. He’s eighth in the league in GAA and seventh overall in save percentage.

Last season, Cossa set a Griffins franchise record with a 19-game point streak (13-0-6). He also tied both the franchise record home and road point streaks of 13 home games (9-0-4) and 10 road contests (8-0-2).
