The Daily: Ex-Red Wings Prospect Makes Canada WJC Team; Lagesson Up

Andrew Gibson

Former Detroit Red Wings prospect defenseman Andrew Gibson, traded to the Nashville Predators last summer, has been named to play for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships.

The Red Wings drafted Gibson in the second round, 42nd overall, in 2023. The Red Wings liked how he was developing, but opted to trade him to Nashville to land the second round pick they needed to send to San Jose to get rid of Jake Walman.

Detroit gave up Gibson for a second-round pick previously owned by the Tampa Bay Lightning, plus feisty Finnish prospect Jesse Kiiskinen.  GM Steve Yzerman then shipped that pick and Walman to San Jose for future considerations.

The bottom line: The Red Wings moved Gibson to move Walman. Getting rid of Walman was essentially about creating cap space for their summer signings (Patrick Kane, Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, etc.). Plus, the Red Wings didn’t always appreciate Walman’s attitude.

GM Steve Yzerman calls up goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa from the Grand Rapids Griffins.

This was a good day to be a Detroit goalie prospect: Michigan State sophomore Trey Augustine made the USA squad for the World Junior Championship tournament.
