The Daily: Red Wings One Point From East Basement; Habs Trade Talk

The Red Wings have played more than one-third of their games (29 of 82) this season and the hole they must dig out of to reach the postseason continues to grow deeper.

Bob Duff chronicled Detroit’s latest loss to Philadelphia, which leaves Detroit six points out of a playoff spot. To make matters worse, the Red Wings have five teams (Columbus Blue Jackets, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Islanders and New York Rangers) before they even reach the wildcard teams.

Cam Talbot returned from the injured list and played well, stopping 30 of 32 shots. But the Red Wings continue to have problems generating offense. Despite their 6-5 shootout win Monday in Buffalo, Detroit now has scored two or fewer goals in 16 of their 30 games (53.3%).

The Red Wings rank 28th in NHL scoring (2.52 goals per game) this season. Much of Detroit’s offense comes from Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond. Those three players have amassed 35 goals. That’s 48% of Detroit’s goals production.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Former Detroit player Dominik Kubalik is not receiving much interest from NHL teams, even though he is playing well in Switzerland.

If the Detroit season continues to go south, the team could be in the running to land a player from the Saginaw Spirit.

Bob Duff looks at coach Derek Lalonde’s record using young players this season in Detroit.

Red Wings Extra

If the Toronto Maple Leafs beat Detroit Saturday and the Montreal Canadiens down the Winnipeg Jets, then Detroit will be be in last place in the Eastern Conference. Since Nov. 8, the Red Wings are 5-9-3
