The Flyers and Red Wings used to fight on the ice. Now the fights are in the crowd.

Today’s Detroit Red Wings might be too young to know this. There was a time in the annals of the NHL when the arrival of the Philadelphia Flyers to your team’s home rink meant you could look forward to a night of epic fights.

The Flyers were in Detroit Wednesday and there was an epic fistic tilt that caught everyone’s attention.

Only this one was in the Little Caesars Arena crowd, involving two fans in the seats and a number of Little Caesars Arena security personnel.

“Yeah, I think everyone was looking at that,” Red Wings forward Patrick Kane said. “So it’d be fun to see that one on replay.”

Okay, Patrick. Here you go.

It was in the third period. A shirtless fan and another fan in the crowd were in the midst of an altercation with LCA security personnel in the lower bowl. It was near the blue line in the end that Detroit was defending.

When it appeared that the bout was broken up and cooler heads were prevailing, it again ignited. The shirtless fellow decked one of the LCA security staff that was seeking to escort him from the building and tried to make a run for it.

Even in the midst of their own heated battle – Detroit was leading 5-4 in a game the Red Wings would eventually win 6-4 – everyone on the ice was suddenly invested in what was happening off the ice.

“That was interesting,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “I’ve never seen one when all four refs and both teams stopped playing to watch mid-game.

“That’s an all timer.”
