Red Wings Send Husso Back to Griffins

The Detroit Red Wings made the decision about whether they were willing to carry three goalies and the answer is “no.”

GM Steve Yzerman returned Husso to Grand Rapids. The Red Wings didn’t practice Thursday, but Husso’s demotion means the team views injured goalie Cam Talbot ready to return to the lineup. Alex Lyon was the winning goalie Wednesday when Detroit downed the Philadelphia Flyers  6-4 in his first game since he was injured on Nov. 25.

The Red Wings play home-and-home Friday and Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens.

Both Talbot (2.69, .916) and Lyon (2.88, .903) have goals-against averages below 3.00 and a save percentages above the NHL average.

Husso played well in his time in Detroit, posting a save percentage of .914 or above in four of his last five starts. He also won his first NHL game in more than a year, making 23 saves to down the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Saturday. The Finnish netminder has also been sharp in his time in the AHL, boasting a 4-0 mark accompanied by a 1.58 GAA and .944 save percentage.

Not Enough Nets

With Jack Campbell now back on the roster after time in NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance program, the Griffins’ goalie situation is a crowded field.

What we for sure is that Sebastian Cossa will likely get the majority of games because his continued development is most important for organization. Cossa has a 10-5-2 record for Grand Rapids with a 2.28 GAA. He has given up two or fewer goals in 10 of his 17 appearances this season.

Not that Husso will be happy being in the AHL, but his arrival, based on how he has played there this season, gives the Griffins a chance to continue to be one of the AHL’s better team. The Griffins currently have the league’s third-best record.
