Sam Gagner, Detroit Red Wings

Former Detroit Red Wings player Sam Gagner, still unsigned, will serve as captain of Canada’s entry to the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. The presumption is that if Gagner plays well in this 101-year old international tournament he might be able to earn another NHL contract.

Gagner, 35, put up five goals and 10 points in 28 games for the Edmonton Oilers last season. He has played 1,043 NHL games, earning a reputation as a strong two-way forward. He played for the Red Wings from 2019 to 2022.

The tournament starts today with Canada taking on host Davos at 2:15 ET.

Detroit prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov scored a Christmas Day game-winning goal.

Former Detroit player Austin Czarnik has found a better situation for him and his family by playing in the Swiss National League.

Former NHL player believes that he should have won one of Nick Lidstrom‘s Norris Trophies.

Red Wings Extra

The Red Wings resume play Friday with a game against Toronto (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network). Meanwhile, blue chip Detroit goalie prospect Trey Augustine will likely start today for USA in its opening game against Germany at the World Junior Championships.  A year ago, the Michigan State goalie helped USA win the gold medal at the WJC.  He was also on USA’s bronze medal team in 2023. Augustine is 8-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) at the WJC with a 2.37 GAA and .911 SVS%. His next win will tie him for second all-time in career victories among Americans with Al Montoya, who played in 12. Augustine is seeking to become the sixth goalie to win three WJC. He would join Yevgeni Belosheikin (URS), Marc Denis (CAN), Andrei Medvedev (RUS), Jamie Storr (CAN) and Alexander Tyzhnyh (URS).
