The Daily: Augustine Gets Start vs. Canada?; Lyon Faces Pens

Trey Augustine

With USA playing Canada at the World Junior Championships tonight at 8 p.m (NHL Network), you would expect Detroit Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine to be in net for USA. First place in their pool is on the line.

Augustine was critical to USA winning the gold a year ago, and he’s trying to win his third WJC medal.

But there has been no announcement and Augustine does have a 3.94 goals-against average and an .878 save percentage after his first two starts , while Western Michigan University goalie Hampton Slukynsky (Los Angeles Kings) owns a 5-1 win against a good Latvia team. That Latvia team downed Canada.

Augustine, a sophomore at Michigan State, needs one win to tie him with Grand Rapids Griffins goalie Jack Campbell for most WJC wins (10) by American goalie.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Bob Duff writes the Red Wings chances, even with Todd McLellan at the helm, of getting back in the playoff race are not very good. With the hole they have dug, they are at best longshot.

GM Steve Yzerman has signed 2024 draft pick Ondrej Becher to a three-year entry level contract.

Detroit blue chip prospect Axel Sandin Pellikka idolizes Pittsburgh defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Andrew Copp believes the Red Wings needed a breath of fresh air.

Red Wings Extra

Detroit, 1-1 with Todd McLellan as head coach, are home against the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight (8 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network). Alex Lyon will be back in net, a reward for playing well in the win against the Washington Capitals. The Red Wings are eight points out or a playoff spot, while the Penguins, 6-3-1 in their last 10, are only one point behind the Ottawa Senators. They hold the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference.
