Red Wings Post-Game: Veleno Has Tying Goal, Memorable Celly

Joe Veleno, Red Wings

DETROIT —  Patrick Kane rated the Joe Veleno celebration of his game-tying goal as “the second-best celly of the night.”

We can assume Kane rated his celebration of the overtime game-winner as No. 1.

“(Veleno’s) was pretty good, though,” Kane said.  “He had a few pumps in there. I’m not sure what the count was. It might have been over/under three and a half pumps, so I think I’m taking the over on that. But it was a good one. It’s nice to see that emotion too. Right. I think it’s a hard thing to do to score in this league, and when you score, it’s cool when guys get excited.”

The over-the-moon reaction probably had as much to do with the importance of the goal as Veleno’s excitement at being on the score sheet. The tally tied the game 2-2 with 15 minutes left in regulation and it seemed to give the team a lift.

Coach Todd McLellan had just switched Veleno and Marco Kasper on their respective lines with the hope of creating a spark. It happened. Veleno scored on a rebound.

He skated hard to boards made sustained eye contact with a fan. Check it out on the video below.

“Yeah, I was just really excited,” Veleno said. “I knew it was a big goal and I knew we were down and obviously feels good. Like Kaner said, it’s hard to score in this league. Maybe not for him, but maybe for someone obviously that doesn’t score very often. I got a little excited and thought it was a big goal for the team, and I’m glad we can pull that one out in overtime and get the two points.

Lyon Injured

After holding the Senators in the first period, Detroit goalie Alex Lyon (10 saves) left the game with an upper body injury.

“He felt something between near the end of the first period, came in between periods and met with the training staff and they felt that it would be best that he didn’t continue on,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. “He’ll get some tests done, already working on them after the game and have more tomorrow. “

The Red Wings don’t play again until Friday. If Lyon misses any time, the Red Wings will likely call-up Ville Husso from the Grand Rapids Griffins. He owned a .923 save percentage for the Red Wings in his last five appearances before being sent down.

Ice Chips

Dylan Larkin, who scored Detroit’s first goal, extended his goal streak to four consecutive games (5-2-7 in four games). That matches the longest goal streak of his NHL career. Larkin also posted a four-game goal streak from Oct. 30-Nov. 8 (5-1-6 in four games). The Detroit captai leads all Red Wings skaters with nine power play goals this season. Larkin (229-312-541 in 692 GP) is five points away from tying John Ogrodnick (265-281-546 in 558 GP) for 12th place on Detroit’s all-time scoring list…Kane leads all Red Wings skaters with four game-winning goals this season. Kane has scored 11 game-winning goals since Jan. 13, 2024. Only Brayden Point (14) and Leon Draisaitl (13) have more during  that span.

Big win. That one was always going to be about having the right attitude which I never think the Red Wings lack when they’ve got the right gameplan. They had it last season and last night was more of that never say die attitude. I’m really glad the sens didn’t pop the streak. Onwards!! And hopefully upwards.

I’m liking how the boys aren’t tapping out or throwing in the towel when they’re trailing.

Seems to be more fight in them.

It’s refreshing to see! 😀

Really great game for Veleno. I’m always hoping that Veleno will become a bigger factor on offense.

Mike Babcock

I’ve always liked Veleno’s speed, hustle and willingness to hit.

But he whiffs on too many scoring chances for my liking.

I’m happy he’s playing well right now.

How long will it last?

I don’t know.

Kane made the sign of the cross. Awesome

Absolutely.

Notable Things:

1) Glad for the win.
2) I hope Kane continues to re-sign with the Wings and just retire here. I think with TM as coach, it may help as well.
3) Veleno always moving his feet… glad for him.
4) Edvinsson had a great game in my book and just really looking good. Holl and Chiarot playing well and critical in the line-up.
5) Johansson got rough up a bit too much. I do not like the Ottawa Senators at all.
6) I really liked seeing Kasper on the wing with Larkin and Raymond and would love to see more of that. I think it could really make for even better line.
7) I hope coach TM can get Ras going. Right now, he is not playing to either his potential or salary… whatever you want to look at.
8) Lyon was playing solid… hope he is okay and not injured badly.

  • I do not like Brady T. No, I would not want him if he was in a Red Wings uniform. I would rather have if Tim S… 8 days a week. Did I say, “I do not like the Ottawa Senators…” Yuck!

That was an entertaining game last night.

Both teams played hard and really wanted the win.

I thought Red Wings were going to lose after Ottawa went up 2-1 but they battled back and got the win.

I thought Ottawa outplayed them most of the time but the Red Wings hung in there.

Red Wings are still getting hemmed in their own end for long stretches.

But they seem to be in better position now.

Maybe that’s the Yawney Effect?

One thing I’ve noticed is how weak Red Wings players are on stick battles.

Maybe Red Wings need to hit the gym harder or just up their compete level?

I am liking the increased confidence level and the Power Play is looking great! 😁

PK is still bad but not as bad as before.

Still ranked 31st in the league though. 🙄

Hope Lyon is ok because we need that 1-2 punch in net the second half of the season.

Red Wings sure do give up quite a few goals on screening the goalie.

I wish we’d score more goals screening opponents goalies.

Anyway, that’s 5 wins in a row for the Red Wings!

We have some very winnable games on the horizon.

Chicago, Seattle and San Jose! 😁

Yeah, their one goal went off one of or players. The 2nd period was a struggle. The third they picked it up. The first line looked better with Kasper on the wing. he made some great plays (passes) and then he himself got robbed by a great save by Forsberg.

Ras and Tarasenko lagging a little bit in my view. Compher with some nice D- play, but he and Copp need to produce more. Ottawa plays really gritty against Detroit. I wish Watson was playing in some of those games as long as he does not take too many penalties.

Mike Babcock

I expected Tarasenko to have a Cup hangover but he should be over it by now.

Ras isn’t playing with any confidence.

He should be using his size to out muscle players but we seldom see it.

These 2 have plenty of time to improve so I’m not writing them off.

Kasper was robbed!

I know Forsberg cheated because he knew the pass was coming but it was still a great save.

I don’t really expect much from Copp except for strong defensive play.

Compher should be producing more.

I don’t question his effort.

I never believed he was a true 2C.

Maybe water is finding its level?

Don’t get me wrong, I admit this team has holes but I’m just happy they’re winning games again.

Where did Bultman get 4% from?

So if Detroit wins its next 3 to make the winning streak 8, is he going to say Detroit has a 10% chance of making the playoffs?

I find it ridiculous.

How about just keep winning games and see what happens?

No no no!

We need more fancy stats! 🤭
