The Red Wings are recalling Ville Husso from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Wednesday was proving to be a big day for a couple of netminders with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL farm club of the Detroit Red Wings.

Ville Husso is coming up to the show. Meanwhile, Sebastian Cossa is getting a reward for coming up big.

The Red Wings announced late Wednesday that they were recalling veteran NHLer Husso from the Griffins under emergency conditions. He’ll be replacing Alex Lyon on the Red Wings roster. Lyon was suffering an upper-body injury that resulted in him departing from his start on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators. Cam Talbot would enter the game and record a 3-2 overtime victory.

Husso will be serving his third stint this season with the Red Wings. He was the club’s opening-night starter. The Finnish netminder has appeared in eight games with Detroit this season. He’s showing a 3.47 GAA and .877 save percentage.

In Grand Rapids, Husso is the owner of a 6-1-0 record. He’s posted two shutouts, along with a 1.86 goals-against average and .935 save percentage.

Red Wings First-Round Pick An AHL All-Star

Also gaining recognition on Wednesday was Griffins netminder Cossa. He and winger Austin Watson will be joining coach Dan Watson as Grand Rapids representatives in the 2025 AHL All-Star Classic. That event will be taking place Feb. 2-3 in Palm Desert, California.

Cossa is 10-6-3 mark with one shutout through 19 games this season. He’s showing a 2.30 GAA and a .918 save percentage.

The 15th overall pick by the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL entry draft ranks among the AHL’s leaders in minutes played (1,120:42, 8th), games played (T8th), GAA (11th), wins (T7th), and save percentage (T9th).

Cossa made his NHL debut for the Red Wings this season. Coming on in relief of Husso, he’d record a 6-5 shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

A 13-year pro, Austin Watson is making his first AHL All-Star Classic appearance. He’s in a tie for the scoring lead on the Griffins with 25 points (9-16-25) in 31 games. Watson is also sharing the team lead in assists and power-play goals (4).

Dan Watson is the first Griffins coach given selection to the AHL All-Star Classic since Todd Nelson in 2017.
