Griffins Set Record, Fall in Shootout; Doucet Draws Notice

The Grand Rapids Griffins fell 5-4 in a shootout at home to the Cleveland Monsters, despite breaking a 14-year-old team shots-on-goal record in the opening period.
The Griffins average 25.4 shots per game, yet somehow managed 26 shots against Cleveland goalie Jet Greaves in the opening 20 minutes. Grand Rapids was ahead 2-0 after that period.
That broke the previous Griffins mark of 24, set March 19, 2011 in a game against Rochester.
Coach Dan Watson’s team followed that up with 10 shots in the second, and eight in the third, as the Monsters tightened up defensively. Ex-NHLer Jack Campbell was in net for Grand Rapids.
The Griffins and Monsters, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ farm team, will play another game tonight in Grand Rapids.
“We’ve got to be harder to play against, whether it’s the third period, or whether it’s overtime,” Watson said. “We have to find ways to win these games at home. We want to take pride in playing here, in front of our fans–make Van Andel (Arena) a tough place to play.”
Here is what some of the Detroit prospects did in this game:
Left Wing Alex Doucet
Doucet contributed a goal and an assist for his fourth multi-point game of the season. He was selected as one of the game’s three stars. He has four points in his past six games. One of his strengths is battling along the boards.
Left Wing Elmer Soderblom
The 6-foot-8 Swedish forward picked up an assist to give him 11 points in his past 15 games. He also boasts eight points in his past nine games.
Defenseman Shai Buium
The former Denver standout registered the first two-assist game of his AHL career. He has no goals and 13 assists on the season.
Center Nate Danielson
Danielson earned his 18th assist of the season and had four shots on goal. He has 22 points in 37 games and leads the Griffins in assists.
