The Red Wings are returning goalie Ville Husso to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

The up-and-down campaign of Detroit Red Wings goalie Ville Husso is re-entering the down cycle. Following Saturday’s 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Wings were reassigning Husso to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Husso was recalled for the third time this season when Alex Lyon went down with an upper-body injury on January 8. Lyon was returning to action in Saturday’s 5-1 loss at Tampa Bay. He took over for starter Cam Talbot to begin the third period. Lyon was stopping all six shots he was facing.

Red Wings coach Todd McLellan has given the indication that Lyon will be Detroit’s starter on the road Sunday (8 p.m.) against the Dallas Stars.

Husso Struggling With Red Wings

Husso made one start during his latest Detroit stint. He took the loss in a 6-3 setback to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. McLellan was brutally honest in his assessment of Husso following that game.

“I would say that he probably has to find a way to make one of those saves,” McLellan said. “I don’t know which one. And you asked me the question, I gotta answer. I got to tell you that. But if you think or anybody in here thinks that game was on the goaltending, it sure wasn’t.”

Oddly enough, Alexandar Georgiev, the winning goalie for the Sharks that night, has one more victory at Little Caesars Arena this season than Husso. He also beat Detroit 2-1 at LCA with the Colorado Avalanche on December 7.

With the Red Wings this season, Husso is 1-5-2 with a 3.69 goals-against average and .866 save percentage. He was the opening-night starter for the Red Wings, losing 6-3 on home ice to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Things have gone much better for Husso in Grand Rapids. He’s seen action ineight games with the AHL Griffins this season. The Finnish netminder has a 6-1-0 record with two shutouts to go along with a 1.86 GAA and a .935 save percentage.

“Yeah, I’d love to be in the NHL full-time for sure, but the situation being what it is just going day by day and trying to get good days on top of each other and enjoying it,” Husso said of his season. “It’s been a lot of fun in GR playing games and winning games. Confidence is high. Just try to do my best.”
