The Daily: Red Wings’ Win in Philly Can Salvage Trip; Big Ned’s Upset

With the Ottawa Senators 5-0-1 in their last six games and the Columbus Blue Jackets showing 6-0-1 in their last seven, the Detroit Red Wings can be excused if they mourn every loss.
The 4-1 setback against Dallas Stars Sunday leaves the Red Wings six points behind Ottawa and five behind Columbus for the final two wildcard spots in the Eastern Conference.
Detroit is 1-2 on a road trip that finishes Tuesday in Philadelphia where the Red Wings are 2-18-2 in their last 22 games there. It may be mid-season, but Detroit has plenty of motivation to overcome the team’s poor history there to salvage this road trip.
A 2-2 outcome with games in Florida, Tampa Bay, Dallas and Philadelphia would have to be considered a successful tip.
“Obviously, the team hasn’t played real well (in Philadelphia) lately, so we got an opportunity to break that streak and come home at .500 in a real tough trip,” McLellan said. “So, we’ll attempt to do that. Expect a lot from the guys and from each other.”
Beating the Flyers isn’t an easy ask: much like the Senators and Blue Jackets are playing well of late. John Tortorella’s team is 4-0-1 in their last five.
