Red Wings Salvage A Point In OT Loss At Philly

It wasn’t a winning effort, but given the Detroit Red Wings’ struggles in the City of Brotherly Love, a point is better than nothing.
Rasmus Ristolainen’s goal with 30 seconds left in overtime was theĀ difference. The Philadelphia Flyers edged the Red Wings, 2-1, on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center.
“Despite not getting the two points, the one we’ll take,” coach Todd McLellan said. “I thought it was actually one of our better efforts on the trip.”
The four-game road trip saw the Wings go 1-2-1. The point earned was only the seventh overall for the Wings in Philadelphia in their last 25 games there. That number consists of two wins and three OT losses.
Chairot Gets Rare Goal For Detroit
Ben Chiarot scored Detroit’s only goal. It came 30 seconds in to the third period and was his second of the second of the season, both against the Flyers.
Alex Lyon was a standout in net, stopping 24 of 26 shots,
“The game goes into overtime, and (Lyon) stood on his on his head all night and got us there,” said Dylan Larkin, who assisted on Chiarot’s goal. “And, you know, the game’s on our stick, and they score, we don’t.”
Larkin called the effort by both tems a “sloppy” game, but McLellan was more generous,.
“It was sloppy because both teams checked real hard,” he said, “and I was happy that our group could do that.”
The point gained didn’t improve the Red Wings’ position in the Eastern Conference. They’re still five points out of eighth place, which is currently held by Montreal. The Wings take on the Canadiens Thursday night at home.
“Leaving a point behind is never a good thing,” McLellan said. “But I don’t think we took steps back tonight. We probably took a step or two forward.”
Soderblom Gets Good Marks in Season Debut
Elmer Soderholm, who was called up from Grand Rapids on Tuesday, made his season debut for the Red Wings Tuesday. It was his first NHL game in more then two years.
“I really liked his game,” McLellan said. “I thought he was assertive (and) I thought he jumped right into the lineup and was a factor. but there was an identity on that, that fourth line.”
Soderblom, a 6-8 forward, had one shot and two hits in the game.
“He was engaged,” Larkin said. “I think he made a lot of really good plays and it would have been nice to see him get one. I was really impressed with this attitude, and how he handled himself.”
