The Daily: Red Wings Need Tarasenko Resurgence; No Pens ‘Fire Sale’

Vladimir Tarasenko, Red Wings

Bob Duff’s story on the Detroit Red Wings’ need for more five-on-five scoring looks even more relevant today with the news that Patrick Kane won’t play tonight because of an injury.

Given Kane’s recent surge, even a short-term Kane absence could hurt Detroit significantly.

Kane’s absence also makes it even more important for Vladimir Tarasenko to shake free from his season-long scoring slump. He’s currently on pace to score 10 goals. That’s not what you expect from a player who has scored 33 or more in six different seasons.

Tarasenko shows two goals in his past 23 games and they both came against the San Jose Sharks,  who rank 31st in goals-against.

The Red Wings need more goals from Tarasenko, particularly if Kane is going to miss multiple games.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Prospect Jesse Kiskinen continues to grow on the Red Wings’ management. He has a hot hand in Finland and a good story to tell about a heart drawing on his stick.

Carter Mazur, Detroit’s third-best forward prospect, comes off the injury list tonight to play for the Grand Rapid Griffins against Manitoba.

Detroit prospects Trey Augustine (Michigan State) and Sam Stange (Nebraska-Omaha) are both on the Hobey Baker candidate list.
