Red Wings vs. Kings: Notes, Lines, Goalies, How to Watch

Todd McLellan, Red Wings

It’s a reunion night for Red Wings coach Todd McLellan, who will face the Los Angeles Kings tonight. It’s the first time he’s seen the Kings since he was fired by the team last season.

He said after today’s morning skate it will be a little strange coaching against his old team.

“It’s usually not a good thing, but yeah, it’s odd,” McLellan said. “It’s like you got sent to another family and you look over at some of your, for lack of a better term,  for your kids, but they’re not your kids, they’re men. But some of the players you’re mentoring and helping them grow and they’re wearing a different color than you, but that’s okay. That’s called sport. That’s called being competitive. And they’re going to want to win just as bad as we’re going to want to win. And that’s why it should be a real good game.”

History with the Kings

McLellan coached the Kings for 4 1/2 seasons before being fired nearly a year ago. The Kings had gotten off to a strong start, then went into a tailspin, losing 14 of his last 17 games.

The opposite has beeen true in Detroit. The Wings have won 10 of the 15 games they’ve played since McLellan’s hiring and go into tonight’s game four points out of a playoff spot.

J.T. Compher won’t be in the lineup tonight. He was injured in a collision with Tampa Bay’s Emil Lilleberg during Saturday’s game. Michael Rasmussen, who was tripped after scoring an empty-net goal and slid into the net, will play. Vladimir Tarasenko is fighting an illness and is likely a game-time decision.

Patrick Kane won’t play tonight, either, but McLellan sees progress.

“Continues to be day to day,” he said. “Obviously didn’t skate today, so. But he’s getting treatments and doing the things he needs to do.”
