Shine May Go On Red Wings’ Road Trip

There’s no change in the Detroit Red Wings’ injury/illness situation and that opens the door for 31-year old rookie Domink Shine to travel to Edmonton Wednesday with the team.
“Right now, the plan is to bring Dominik along,” Coach Todd McLellan said. “We haven’t seen Vladdy (Tarasenko) so I don’t know what he’s going to feel like or the type of energy he has.”
Shine is the oldest player to make his NHL and Red Wings debut in the same game since Vaclav Nedomansky joined the team in 1978-79. He recorded two hits, including a memorable wallop against Alex Turcotte, plus two takeaways and a blocked shot.
“His first game wasn’t the path back to Grand Rapids,” McLellan said about Shine. “He had a real good night.”
McLellan said Tarasenko still isn’t feeling well, and injured J.T. Compher is not practicing. The Red Wings are going on a four-game trip to play Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and Seattle.
“I think Patty (Kane) skated a little bit, so that’s a good sign,” McLellan said.
Injured defenseman Jeff Petry also fully practiced for the first time since leaving the lineup Jan. 2. “A lot depends on how he feels (Wednesday),” he said.
Johansson Won His Red Wings Job
One important question is where Petry will fit once he’s ready to play. Since he left the lineup, Albert Johansson has all but claimed his place among the top four defensemen. He’s partnered with Simon Edvinsson who was also his partner with the Grand Rapids Griffins last season.
Johansson, lighter than most NHL defensemen, has proven he can hold his own against heavier forwards. Doesn’t he deserve to stay in the lineup?
“I think so — I guess I have to say it,” McLellan said. “I don’t think he has done anything to give any of his game back. So good for him.”
That doesn’t mean Petry is out of the picture. William Lagesson, who has had a strong season with Grand Rapids, is up with Detroit. He would go down when Petry is ready.
“We think we have eight D we can play on any given night.” McLellan said. “The six that have consistently been in there have done a real good job, but you can’t survive on six in this league. When Petry is ready to go he’s going to get some playing time. The player’s job is to make it really tough on the coaches to decide on who comes and who goes. We expect them all to do that.
Petry and Holl to take turns sitting it out. Leave the top four D alone… they have played well
Is Patrick Kane going on the trip. No clarification from Todd. I will be in Vancouver on Sunday to watch the guys
Mac says he hasn’t seen Tarasenko. Well. We haven’t either.
