The Detroit Red Wings’ injury news was mostly positive as they left town Wednesday to start their four-game road trip Thursday in Edmonton.

Patrick Kane skated. “But likely not ready,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said.

Vladimir Tarasenko should be ready to play against Edmonton. He practiced Wednesday.

“Vladdy is coming back from illness, he should be (ready),” McLellan said, “… unless something goes wrong after practice. But he looked good, he worked hard. Looked like he had energy so I’m sure he’ll be ready.”

Kane is on the trip, as is J.T. Compher who is day-to-day for an injury he received on a hit from Tampa Bay defenseman Emil Lilleberg. The Norwegian player received a two-game suspension for the hit that earned him an interference penalty in the game.

The suspension came because the blow was to the head, and the hit was late. It was delivered well after Compher had passed the puck.

Defenseman Jeff Petry, who hasn’t played since Jan. 2 because of injury, is not on the trip. The Red Wings anticipated Dominik Shine going on the trip because of the uncertainty with the sidelined players.

Double Trouble For Red Wings

The Red Wings are starting the road trip against an Edmonton Oilers team that has the league’s third-best record (32-15-3). They have won seven out of the last 10, including their last three games.

Although the team has improved defensively under McLellan dealing with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl is always challenging. McLellan formerly coached the Oilers and their two superstars.

“First of all, are they playing together or apart, and that can change at any moment,” McLellan said. “I had that luxury of coaching them and the two of them are elite separately and they’re super-elite together. They play a completely different game, one fast, one slows it down, the passing and vision. They remind me of the Sedins, but they’re not twins.”

McLellan said the two superstars have a similar thought process.

“Thirty-one other teams have tried to figure out a way to slow them down for the past 10 years and maybe the only team that solved it was Florida and it took them to seven,” McLellan said. “They’re dynamic, they’re going to get their chances. Goaltending is going to have to be important, we’re going to have to stay out of the penalty box. “
