Detroit Red Wings prospect Red Savage’s Michigan State season has been ended by an upper body injury. The  only question now is what comes next for Savage.

Will he sign with the Red Wings or wait until Aug. 15 and become an unrestricted free agent?

Savage, the son of former NHLer Brian Savage, isn’t an elite prospect. He has 28 goals in a 125 college games for Miami and Michigan State. But when you talk to knowledgable decision makers in the NHL community, many believe Red Savage can play in the NHL.

The Red Wings 2021 fourth round pick is a leader, a hard-working player, a two-way performer who can raise his level at key times. He is Michigan State’s captain.  He is a high character athlete.

The Red Wings, owning a three-game winning streak, are in Edmonton tonight (9 p.m., ET, FanDuel Sports Network) to play the Oilers in the first game of a four-game road trip.  With Lucas Raymond scoring his 20th in the win over Los Angeles, the Red Wings now have three players over the 20-goal-mark. Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat boast 21 goals. It’s been almost 30 years since Detroit had three 20-goal scorers by the 50-game mark. In 1995-96, Slava Kozlov had 26, Steve Yzerman, 24, and Sergei Fedorov, 22, by the 50-game mark.  Raymond is the fourth Swedish-born player in NHL history to record three 20-goal seasons before the age of 23, joining Mats Sundin (four times), Filip Forsberg (three times) and Gabriel Landeskog (three times).
