As exciting at the latest Grand Rapids Griffins victory was, and as thrilling as would prove to be for Carson Bantle to score his first AHL goal, it was all almost overshadowed by that most unique of hockey events, a goalie fight.

As Bantle was just beginning to celebrate his goal that made it 3-1 for the Griffins over the Rockford IceHogs, all heck broke loose.

An altercation beside the Rockford net broke out between Grand Rapids forward Cross Hanas and Icehogs defenseman Kevin Korchinski. Bantle went after Korchinsi and then suddenly, Rockford goalie Drew Commesso was jumping into the fray to make it a foursome.

The next thing you know, Cossa is rambling all the way down the ice. He and Commesso wound up paired off in the midst of what was now a melee involving all 12 players on the ice.

“I asked him if he wanted to go,” Cossa said. “He said, ‘No.’ And then it was just kind of congratulating each other on our NHL debuts and stuff like that.”

Griffins Cossa, IceHogs Commesso Discuss NHL Bows

Cossa made his NHL bow for the Detroit Red Wings on December 9 at Buffalo. Entering in relief of starter Ville Husso, he would backstop the Red Wings to a 6-5 shootout win over the Sabres.

Three days later, Commesso made his first NHL appearance for the Chicago Blackhawks. He relieved starter Arvid Soderblom – the older brother of former Griffins forward and current Red Wings player Elmer Soderblom – in a 5-4 loss to the New York Islanders. Commesso stopped both shots he faced in 11:21 of action.

On December 14, Commesso made his first NHL start. He was making 20 stops in a 4-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

“Wished each other the best of luck the rest of the way here,” Cossa added. “We’ll be seeing them down the road here.”

Grand Rapids beat Rockford in last season’s Calder Cup playoffs, with Cossa and Commesso the opposing netminders.

The two Central Division rivals will meet seven more times during the AHL regular season. They clash at Van Andel Arena on March 21, March 22 and April 4. They also face off on March 15, April 5, April 16 and April 18 in Rockford.
