The Daily: Did Red Wings Miss Out on Miller?; Michkov Benched

JT Miller, New York Rangers

The NHL witnessed its second major trade in a week when the Vancouver Canucks sent center J.T. Miller to the New Yorks in a multi-player swap.

Vancouver moved Miller along with throw-ins Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington to the New York Rangers for forward Filip Chytil ($4.4 million), defenseman Victor Mancini ($950,000) and a top-13 protected 2025 first-round draft pick.

The Rangers have to accept all $8 million of Miller’s salary. He is tied up through 2029-30 season.

Vancouver wasn’t done dealing. The Canucks flipped the Rangers’ first round pick, plus three players to land proven D man Marcus Pettersson, plus forward Drew O’Connor from Pittsburgh.

Penguins Haul From Other NHL Deal

The Penguins land Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais, the first round pick, plus 2024 third-round draft pick Melvin Fernstrom from the Canucks.

On the Miller move, USA TODAY gave the Canucks a C for the trade, while grading the Rangers with a B.

Miller likely will become New York’s No. 1 center because Mika Zibanejad and Vincent Trocheck are both having off years.

The Red Wings could have used  a center like Miller for their second line, but their fit with Vancouver was far more complicated. The Red Wings only have $1.8 million in cap space, and the Canucks didn’t want to take big salaried players back.

Jonatan Berggren is probably the closest forward in age and skill to Chytil, but he is not as proven as Chytil who has 75 career NHL goals at age 25. The Red Wings don’t have a defenseman quite like the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Mancini who has NHL experience at age 22. The Rangers and Canucks were very high on Mancini.

Axel Sandin Pellikka is the best offensive defenseman in Sweden. The Red Wings were not giving him up.

They have given Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider long-term deals worth more than $8 million. Did they want a fourth-place in that salary range?

Plus, Detroit would have needed to move J.T. Compher and Justin Holl and that wasn’t going to happen with Vancouver.i

Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon have produced plenty of quality starts for the Red Wings.
