Red Wings at Canucks: Notes, Lines, Goalies, How to Watch

The Detroit Red Wings are back in action on short notice tonight, playing in Vancouver (8 pm ET). It’s the third game of a four-game road trip.

They’ve won the first two after beating Calgary last night. 3-1 to go with a win at Edmonton to start the trip.

The win, their 13th since Todd McLellan (13-4-1) took over as coach, matches the win total undeer Derek Lalonde (13-17-4).

It’s been a long climb for the Wings, but they could slip into a playoff spot with a win while Boston and Tampa Bay are idle.

The Canucks have been busy on the trade market this week, sending J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers in one deal and getting Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor from Pittsburgh on Saturday. Four players, including two from the Rangers, make their Vancouver debuts tonight.

The Canucks are in much the same situation as the Red Wings, a point out of the playoffs, although the Western Conference isn’t nearly as jam-packed as the East. Former Michigan defenseman and reigning Norris Trophy holder Quinn Hughes is a game-time decision due to a lower-body injury.

The Red Wings hae won five in a row for the second time under McLellan this season, and are in a position all but the most optimistic fans would have found highly unlikely even a month ago.

After years of struggle since Steve Yerman was hired as GM, it looks more and more like McLellan was the missing ingredient.  They’re getting more results from their young players on defense, especially, and have more prospects developing in Grand Rapids.

Two wins on a Western road swing is a good sign, and three would be even better. The key thing is, however, that  the Red Wings are looking like the team the Red Wings thought they were getting at the beginning of the season.
