Historic Trip For Red Wings

Detroit has never gone 4-0 on a road trip and not made the playoffs

Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has been part of four of five Red Wings teams to post a 4-0 road trip.

That they’ve made their move into a playoff spot would probably be enough to make the Detroit Red Wings four-game Western road trip a remarkable experience.

It was also a history-making journey for the club. Going 4-0 with wins at Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and Seattle, Detroit did something for the first time in nearly three decades and for only the fifth time in the storied history of the franchise.

The last time the Red Wings were completing a sweep of a four-game road trip was in March of 1996, en route to what was then an NHL-record 62 victories.

Red Wings In Seventh Heaven

“Hopefully it’s only the beginning,” defenseman Moritz Seider said. “I mean hopefully there are many more.

“I mean we just have won seven in a row again, swept the road trip.”

Seider is correct. Detroit has now assembled a pair of seven-game winning streaks since Todd McLellan took over as coach on December 26.

Let’s look back at the other Red Wings four-game road trip sweeps.

March 3-10, 1996

The Streak: Detroit 6 at Chicago 2 (March 3); Detroit 4 at Hartford 2 (March 6); Detroit 4 at Colorado 2 (March 8); Detroit 5 at Winnipeg 2 (March 10)

Significant Outcome: Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood scored an empty-net goal against the Whalers. He’s the only Detroit netminder to score a goal in an NHL game

Season Outcome: Lost to Colorado Avalanche in Western Conference final

April 5-11, 1995

The Streak: Detroit 5 at San Jose 3 (April 5); Detroit 4 at Toronto 2 (April 7); Detroit 4 at Chicago 1 (April 9); Detroit 4 at Dallas 1 (April 11)

Significant Outcome: Bob Errey had points in all four games, registering 2-4-6 totals during the streak

Season Outcome: Lost Stanley Cup final to New Jersey Devils

November 9-16, 1988

The Streak: Detroit 6 at Minnesota North Stars 3 (Nov. 9); Detroit 5 at Philadelphia 4 (Nov. 12); Detroit 5 at New York Rangers 3 (Nov. 13); Detroit 4 at Hartford 3 (Nov. 16)

Significant Outcome: Detroit’s victory at Philadelphia was just the second by the club since 1971

Season Outcome: Lost first-round playoff series to Chicago Blackhawks

February 8-17, 1951

The Streak: Detroit 4 at Chicago 3 (Feb. 8); Detroit 2 at Toronto 1 (Feb. 10); Detroit 2 at Boston 1 (Feb. 11); Detroit 2 at Montreal 1 (Feb. 17)
