The Daily: Red Wings Still Looking at Buffalo Forward?; Pettersson Signs

Cozens to Detroit NHL trade rumor that won’t go away

Yzerman, red wings

The Detroit Red Wings’ interest in Dylan Cozens, 23, is a rumor that won’t go away. It began a couple of months and it surfaced again Wednesday when Hockey Insider Kevin Weekes said the Montreal Canadians, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings were interested in the big forward.

GM Steve Yzerman likely has interest in Cozens, or at the very least, has looked at him as an option for his second line.

But Detroit doesn’t have the cap space, and we are hearing that the Sabress are looking to make a hockey trade and are not interested in any of the high-salaried veterans  Detroit would have to move to fit Cozens into their cap situation.

The Sabres supposedly aren’t looking to gain prospects or draft picks in a deal. If they move Cozens, and they may not, they want a player, or players, back who help them now. The Red Wings are not a good fit in that regard.

Plus, given their 15-4-1 record over the last 20 games, the Red Wings might be hesitant to make a trade that disrupts the chemistry.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

With NHL teams headed to the 4 Nations Face-off, Dominik Shine was returned to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Loss of defenseman Jeff Petry for two months doesn’t mean Detroit has to make a move right away.

The Red Wings’ recent 4-0 road trip (wins against Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks and Seattle Kraken) marked the first time in 29 years the team has accomplished that kind of road success.

Red Wings Extra

Detroit is now 15-4-1 in the 20 games under coach Todd McLellan. The team is scoring 3.45 goals per game under McLellan.

Detroit has one game remaining (Saturday home against Tampa Bay) before the 4 Nations Face-off.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

If the Wings had averaged that all season, they would have the league’s fourth-highest scoring average. The Red Wings were 13-17-4 under Derek Lalonde. Detroit has one game remaining (Saturday home against Tampa Bay) before the 4 Nations Face-off.
