The Daily: Larkin Fourth Liner in NHL Tourney?; Nelson Update

Historically, when NHL players are involved in best-on-best tournaments, coaches take a verbal beating over line combinations and power play choices.
The problem: It’s impossible to fit 12 or 13 elite forwards into three No. 1 line spots. The power play matrix is equally problematic.
That’s the basic explanation for why some fans are unhappy that Detroit captain Dylan Larkin has been practicing on USA’s fourth line and isn’t on either USA power play unit. He is on pace for his sixth season of scoring 30 or more goals and his 12 power play goals leave him only one short of Jake Guentzel who is the NHL leader with 13. Larkin ranks eighth among American forwards in points this season.
He certainly measures up to the group in terms of skating ability and competitiveness. Players seem to understand how circumstances can work against them in terms of playing time. Larkin even said before the tournament that he might end up as a role player.
But how do you see it? The Americans open this NHL tournament Thursday against Finland.
