Czech Rookie Gets Griffins Back on Course

Even as the Grand Rapids Griffins were in the midst of a 1-for-29 power play slump, coaches knew they were going to pull out of it soon because they were getting too many chances.
But they probably would not have guessed it would be two power play goals by rookie Ondrej Becher that ended the drought.

Becher, who had four goals coming into the game, registered the first two-goal game of his career to power the Griffins to 5-4 shootout win against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Saturdays.
Here is the rest of the story: The Czech forward also netted one of Grand Rapids two shootout goals. Joe Snively added the other.
“(Becher’s) got a lot of skill,” Watson said in the post-game press conference. “He skates really well…It’s nice to see him step up in the shootout. He made a nice move, and he had the goalies number tonight.”
It was an important win for a Griffins team that has been struggling of late to score goals and to find victories. They had lost seven out of eight before that win, scoring only 12 goals in that stretch.
Nate Danielson also scored his sixth goal of the season in the Grand Rapids win.
Ville Husso made 35 saves to raise his AHL record to 8-4. He has a 2.70 goals-against average.
The Griffins are home against Sunday (5 p.m.) to play the Iowa Wild.
