Odds Are Red Wings Will Still Miss Playoffs

Betting sites projecting Detroit to miss NHL postseason

Red Wings action
Major US online sports betting sites don't view the Red Wings as an NHL playoff team.

As they return to the ice Saturday afternoon for their first game since Feb. 8, the Detroit Red Wings find themselves occupying an NHL playoff spot. Will this euphoria last?

The leading online sports betting sites in the USA are suggesting that you don’t bet on it.

Setting the odds on the Red Wings making the playoffs, oddsmakers at these betting sites are leaning heavily toward the answer being no.

Take BetMGM, for instance. This sportsbook has the Wings missing the playoffs with favored odds of -286. Detroit to make the playoffs is set with a betting line of +230.

For those who aren’t fluent in sports betting, here’s what those numbers mean. At +230, that means if you bet $100 on Detroit making the NHL postseason, you’d win $230 were the Wings to be a playoff team. However, at odds of -286, that means you’d need to wager $286 on Detroit missing the playoffs in order to realize a profit of $100 on the wager.

In other words, the odds are favoring Detroit being out of the playoffs. DraftKings is also of this mindset. This betting site has the Wings are +250 to make the playoffs and -310 not to be a playoff team.

BetMGM’s over/under on Detroit points for the season is set at 87.5. If you bet the team to go over that number, you’ll get -115 odds. The betting line on the under is -105. In this instance, the betting site will give you shorter odds if you take the Wings to gain more than 87.5 points. DraftKings also has the Wings at a total of 87.5 points. You’ll get -120 odds on the over and -110 on the under.

There’s also a prop bet at BetMGM on Detroit to record 90+ points. You’ll be getting odds of +130 if you play this wager.

Red Wings McLellan Getting Action

The 15-5-1 mark Detroit has set since Todd McLellan took over as head coach has the Detroit bench boss getting some love in the Jack Adams Trophy future book odds.

McLellan is now the fourth betting choice at DraftKings to be named NHL coach of the year. However, he’s given long odds of +4000.

Spencer Carbery, who’s led the Washington Capitals to the Metropolitan Division lead, is the overwhelming -170 chalk to be the Jack Adams Trophy winner.
