The Daily: Red Wings Benefit From Sens’ Loss; NHL Rumors

The Detroit Red Wings understand the potentially calamitous consequences of blowing Saturday’s lead against Minnesota and giving away a point.
But in the short run, earning only one point against Minnesota was enough to move coach Todd McLellan’s team into the top wildcard position. That happened because the Ottawa Senators had an even more calamitous 5-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.
Detroit, Ottawa and the Columbus Blue Jackets all have 62 points, but the Red Wings, at .544, have the best points percentage of the trio.
That gives them optimism heading into today’s game against Anaheim, a game Detroit should win. Saturday’s results show how truly tight the Eastern Conference race can be.
