Carter Mazur NHL Debut Reduced to Two Shifts by Injury (VIDEO)

With an estimated 200-plus friends and family in attendance for his NHL debut for the Detroit Red Wings, Michigan native Carter Mazur suffered an injury on his second shift and had to leave the game.

The scrappy scoring forward was trying to check Utah’s Jack McBain along the boards when he suffered an upper body injury. He immediately went down the tunnel to the dressing room. The Red Wings announced between periods that he would not return. Detroit lost the game 4-2.

“You basically really have to be banged up if you’re not going to return to the ice your first night
that early in the game,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said. “So he won’t travel with us and he’ll be
further evaluated later tonight and tomorrow and I’ll have a  better report for you then.”

GM Steve Yzerman called up Mazur from the Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday. He started the game on a line with Jonatan Berggren and Tyler Motte. Late last season and into the postseason, Mazur played on a line with Jonathan Berggren and Marco Kasper.

“When Maze comes in, the guys were truly excited. He read the starting lineup,” McLellan said. “He’s out there flying around in warm up. I think (friends and family) bought a whole section, basically. And then for him to leave that, you feel that a little bit on the bench, but there’s no excuse at all.

Second Injury

He had a good training camp this fall, and made a bid to make the team. The Red Wings sent him to Grand Rapids where he suffered an injury that kept him sidelined three months.

“I would say (I’m) just getting back to my game, I felt like my game wasn’t there for the first five games, coming back from that injury,” Mazur said earlier in the day. “So it’s been pretty tough to get back to that. But once I got back to it, I felt very comfortable in where I was at and how it’s playing out.”

The was on a six-game points streak (4-3-7) when he was called up. This season he has eight goals and seven assists for 15 points in 20 games.

Mazur, 22, turned pro after helping his Denver team win an NCAA title. He played 60 games last season for Grand Rapids, scoring 17 goals and finishing with 37 points.
