The Daily: Husso Dons Detroit Mask in Ducks Start; ‘Canes on Tap

Ville Husso, red wings

The Anaheim Ducks acquired Ville Husso from Detroit Feb. 24 primarily to serve as a goalie for their San Diego Gulls farm team. But John Gibson’s injury resulted in Husso being called up to the Ducks.

Husso debuted for the Ducks Wednesday, and lost 3-2 decision to the Utah Hockey Club. Given he faced 39 shots, he played reasonably well for his new team. But what made his effort more memorable is that Husso wore his Red Wings mask with his Ducks uniform.

The sixteen days between the trade and his Ducks outing wasn’t quite long enough to have a new mask commissioned.

The .924 game save percentage was better than we saw normally witnessed from Husso in Detroit. This season, Husso posted an .866 save percentage in nine games for Detroit. In his first two seasons, Husso’s save percentages were .896 and .892.

Detroit fans had come to expect Husso to give up three or more goals. This season, in his nine outings, Husso gave up three or more goals six times. The Finnish goalie is still up with Anaheim, although Lukas Dostal is the starting goalie.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Detroit signs Swedish draft pick Anton Johansson. He is no relation to Albert Johansson. Anton will play with the Grand Rapids Griffins for the rest of the season.

The recently acquired Petr Mrazek is a far different version than the Petr Mrazek who launched his career in Detroit.

Marco Kasper has earned his opportunity to be the team’s No. 2 center by going hard to the net.

Red Wings Extra

Detroit’s most dangerous weapon, the team’s power play units, may not be the factor the Red Wings want them to be when they face the Carolina Hurricanes tonight (7p.m., FanDuel Sports Network). Coach Todd McLellan’s team owns the NHL’s third-best power play (28.9%), but it will be going up against a Carolina squad that boasts the league’s second-best penalty killing efficiency (84.2%). The Red Wings, two points out of a playoff spot, need to pick up points this weekend with games against Carolina and Vegas.
