The Daily: Flyers May Have Eye on Lyon; Pens Not Done

Philadelphia Hockey Now’s William James writes this week that it would make perfect sense for the Philadelphia Flyers to sign Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon this summer to work in tandem next season with Sam Ersson.
The Flyers organization has familiarity with Lyon because he played with them, or their affiliate, from 2016-17 to 2020-21.

Lyon will be a free agent this summer, and Detroit already has Cam Talbot and Petr Mrazek under contract for next season. Plus, Sebastian Cossa is knocking at the door of the NHL. Lyon would have to be enticed with an opportunity to play in a more traditional two-goalie system.
“As for Ersson’s backups–Ivan Fedotov and Aleksei Kolosov–neither has really proven to able to help Ersson by earning a consistent split of the workload,” James wrote. “Fedotov is streaky; he’ll play great one game, then remind you why he is the backup in his next start. As for Kolosov, he has not proven that he is NHL ready. I don’t think that will change anytime soon.”
Red Wings In Case You Missed It
Detroit’s road to the NHL playoffs involves travel over some challenging terrain.
Alex DeBrincat has moved past last season’s inconsistency to be the Red Wings most dependable scorer this season.
Perhaps Jonatan Berggren will be back in Detroit’s lineup today after being a healthy scratch for three games. Coach Todd McLellan says Berggren needs to steal his playing time from one of his teammates.
Red Wings Extra
Given how desperate the Red Wings are to earn points in the standings, they are probably catching the Vegas Golden Knights at the right time. The Golden Knights are playing their second game in two days, and third in four days, when they meet Detroit today for a 1 p.m matinee at Little Caesars Arena (TNT, MAX). The Golden Knights have lost three of their last four, including Saturday’s 4-3 shootout loss to Buffalo.
