No. 1-ranked Michigan State’s unexpected loss to No. 16 Cornell in the NCAA hockey tournament has started the countdown to the Detroit Red Wings signing Spartans goalie Trey Augustine.

After trailing most of the game, Cornell pulled off a 4-3 upset against the MSU squad. Sullivan Mack scored against Augustine with 10 seconds left in regulation for the game-winner. Augustine posted 17 saves in the game.

Sources say the Red Wings would like to sign the South Lyon native and perhaps get him some minor league games before the end of the season. Augustine doesn’t have anything left to prove as a Detroit prospect.  Last month, TSN’s Craig Button selected him as the No. 20 affiliated prospect in his annual rankings.  Augustine, 20, is only a sophomore and it’s up to him whether he wants to turn pro now or later.

No one could have anticipated the Spartans would be eliminated this early. MSU had been ranked the No. 1 team in the country.

Trey Augustine (drafted 41st in 2023) improved this season, lowering his season goals-against average to 2.08 while improving his save percentage to .924.

A couple of years ago, the Red Wings goalie cupboard was bare. But now they have Sebastian Cossa (Grand Rapids Griffins) and Augustine as their top goalie prospects, plus Carter Gylander (playing for the Toledo Walleye) and Rudy Guimond (Moncton, QMJHL) worth watching. Guimond was 16-0 going into the QMJHL playoffs. He will play collegiately at Yale.

The Red Wings also keeping an eye on Jan Bednar (Toledo Walleye) who is on a Grand Rapids contract. He has played well.
