The centuries-old saying of “jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire” seems particularly appropriateĀ  for the Detroit Red Wings today as they anticipate an important road game against the St. Louis Blues Tuesday.

Detroit had one of its stingier defensive games in a while to down the rebuilding Boston Bruins Saturday at Little Caesars Arena. After moving out key veterans, including Brad Marchand, at the trade deadline, the Bruins now have lost eight games in a row.

But the Red Wings needed one of their better efforts to earn that victory. Goalie Cam Talbot needed a memorable save with 10 seconds left to preserve the win.

And Tuesday, needing another win just as badly, they are facing a challenge at the other end of the competitive spectrum.

The St. Louis Blues have won nine in a row to take command of a Western Conference wildcard spot. In those nine wins, the Blues have given up only 13 goals. That’s 1.44 goals per game.

The Red Wings, three points out of the playoffs, are running out of runway for a takeoff in this race. To beat the surging Blues, the Red Wings will have to play better than they did against the Bruins

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Is Dylan Larkin playing injured? That’s the question fans are asking after watching him over the last several games. He just isn’t performing like he usually does. Larkin has no goals over the past five games, and he has one over the last nine games. He is minus-6 in those games.
