Red Wings Video You Need to See: Lego Version of Osgood vs Roy
Goalies fought on April 1, 1998

On a difficult day to be a Detroit Red Wings fan, as they come to realization that yet again, it appears that the Stanley Cup playoffs are an event in which other teams participate, here’s a little much-needed joy to improve your mood.
Yesterday was the anniversary of the goalie fight between Red Wings Chris Osgood and Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche. And to celebrate the moment, it’s been captured in a Lego version of the spirited scrap.

The detail is incredible. You see Osgood doffing his mask, and Roy pulling Osgood’s Detroit sweater off over his head. And of course, there’s plenty of punches exchanging back and forth via their little Lego hands.
Red Wings Won Infamous Game
This April 1, 1998 contest was a rematch of the March 25, 1997 fight night at the Joe, when Detroit’s Darren McCarty exacted revenge on Colorado’s Claude Lemieux for his cheap shot on Kris Draper in the 1996 Western Conference final. That night, Roy squared off with Detroit goalie Mike Vernon.
Vernon was gone by the time of this game, dealt to the San Jose Sharks in the summer of 1997. It was Osgood’s net now and much like Vernon, he was prepared to defend it.
The fight occurred at the 12:49 mark of the third period. It started with a melee in front of the benches. Originally, Roy and Osgood were calming watching events unfold from their respective goal creases.
Eventually, Roy doffed his mask and gloves and skated toward the brawl. Osgood responded. Referee Terry Gregson unsuccessfully sought to keep the combatants apart. The two netminders came together, engaging in a spirited tilt in the neutral zone.
Here’s what the real deal looked like:
Gregson was assessing Osgood a minor for leaving his crease, a fighting major and game misconduct. Roy received a leaving the crease minor, fighting major, 10-minute misconduct and game misconduct.
The two arch rivals were also playing this game at Joe Louis Arena. Not only was Osgood chucking knuckles, he was also pitching a shutout. He stopped 13 shots in Detroit’s 2-0 victory. Sergei Fedorov tallied both Red Wings goals.
