The SHL semifinals didn’t get off to a winning start for Axel Sandin Pellikka, but it was a record-setting night for the Detroit Red Wings prospect regardless.

In a 4-1 loss to Brynas, Skelleftea defenseman Sandin Pellikka recorded an assist. With this helper, the player Detroit made the 17th selection of the 2023 NHL entry draft is now the junior-aged defender with the most points in SHL playoff history, with a total of 12 points.

The previous record of 11 points was held by Adam Almquist. Almquist was also a Red Wings defenseman. Chosen 210th overall in the 2009 draft, Almquist played two games for Detroit in 2013-14, scoring one goal. He currently plays for Cologne Sharks of Germany’s DEL.

Red Wings Pick Still Perfect

Perhaps Rudy Guimond’s nickname should be Curt Hennig. Ever since the Red Wings draftee joined the Moncton Wildcats, he’s proven to be the QMJHL version of Mr. Perfect when he’s between the pipes.

Guimond (169th, 2023) was adding two more wins and another shutout as the Wildcats were sweeping the Quebec Remparts in the opening round of the QMJHL playoffs. The top-ranked team in the CHL, Moncton was the first club to advance to second-round play.

Guimond is showing a .946 save percentage and 1.50 goals-against average during the postseason. He went 16-0 with a 1.73 GAA and .940 GAA with three shutouts during the QMJHL regular season.

It’s Not Miller Time

Things didn’t go so perfectly for the other Detroit goaltending prospect in the CHL playoffs. Landon Miller and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds were vanquished in five games by the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL playoffs.

Miller (126th overall, 2024) saw action in three games of the series. He was 0-2 with a 5.61 GAA and .765 save percentage.

Swedish Goalie Heading To Red Wings?

There’s speculation in the hockey world that the Red Wings may be adding another name to the club’s roster of goaltenders. Rogle netminder Arvid Holm is rumored to be signing a free-agent contract with Detroit once the SHL season concludes.

The 26-year-old netminder has NHL size at 6-foot-5 and 213 pounds. Originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 2017, Holm spent three seasons in the AHL before returning to his native Sweden this season. With Rogle, Holm won the Honken Trophy as Sweden’s top netminder. He posted a .924 save percentage and 1.90 GAA for Rogle in 2024-25.

With Trey Augustine opting to stay at Michigan State for his junior season, it’s likely that the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins are going to be in need of another goaltender for next season.

Praise For Buchelnikov

Red Wings draftee Dmitri Buchelnikov’s club Vityaz didn’t qualify for the KHL playoffs. The left-winger is earning praise in the Russian media nonetheless. Buchelnikov set a club record with 39 assists. He led Vityaz with 54 points. That was one shy of the team’s single-season mark.

“Dmitri is one of the most gifted hockey players of his age, and when he transferred from SKA, rapid progress was predicted,” wrote Igor Protasov on the KHL website. “But it seems that Buchelnikov has surpassed even the wildest expectations.”
