Former Red Wings Goalie Dead At 67
Greg Millen played for Detroit in 1991-92

Greg Millen, who wound up his long NHL netminding career with the Detroit Red Wings, died Monday. He was 67 years old.
Millen was most well-known to the current generation of fans for his work as an analyst with Hockey Night In Canada. Before that, he was a regular NHL netminder for 14 seasons.
His broadcasting career began doing regional games for the Ottawa Senators in 1992-93. Millen’s big break came when he covered the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. The following year, he was hired by HNIC.

By the late 2000s, he was the main analyst working in the booth alongside both Bob Cole and Jim Hughson. He also worked on regional broadcasts for games of the Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs. Millen worked three Olympics, two Wold Cups of Hockey and a dozen Stanley Cup finals.
Millen played his junior hockey for the Peterborough Petes, the same club that produced Red Wings legends Steve Yzerman and Mickey Redmond. He made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Nov. 1, 1978.
Twice, Millen carried teams to the Stanley Cup final four. In 1985-86 with the St. Louis Blues. Millen played 10 playoff games that spring as the Blues reached the conference finals. He would also play 14 games for a Chicago Blackhawks team that was a conference finalist in 1990.
In 1988-89, he would post a league-leading six shutouts with the Blues. Millen also played with the Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques.
Red Wings Were Millen’s Final NHL Team
He played the final 10 games of his NHL career with the Red Wings during the 1991-92 season. Millen was acquired from the New York Rangers for future considerations on Dec. 26, 1991.

Millen’s final NHL game came with the Red Wings on March 17, 1992. He made 22 saves during a 5-4 win over the San Jose Sharks. He went 3-2-3 that season for Detroit with a 2.71 goals-against average and .896 save percentage.
Prior to Michael Hutchinson’s one-game stint with Detroit last season, Millen was the most recent Red Wings goaltender who caught with his right hand. He was also among the last remaining helmet and cage goalies in the NHL.
