Also joining Sweden’s squad is Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Arvid Soderblom. He’s the brother of Red Wings forward Elmer Soderblom.
Elmer Soderblom played some pre-tournament games for Sweden prior to the 2022 Worlds. However, he won’t be avilable this time around. Soderblom was reassigned to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins for the Calder Cup playoffs when Detroit’s season came to an end.
First World Tourney For Red Wings Rearguard
As for Edvinsson, 22, it will be the first time he’ll play for Sweden at the senior international level. He put up 7-24-31 numbers in 78 games this season.
Since taking over as coach of the team after Christmas, Todd McLellan is impressed by the growth he’s seen in all aspects of Edvinsson’s game in just those few months.
“He’s a harder player now,” McLellan said. “He’s more aggressive now. He is more responsible for the good and the bad things that happen during a game. Like he has really grown up and maybe gone from a boy to a man.
“I don’t know if that’s fair to say. But you know, there’s still more runway there for him to keep going. So you see all the hockey stuff, we see all the other evolution, the commitment to strength and both mentally and physically exist with him. So that’s been impressive.”

Another element about Edvinsson that leads to double takes is the team-leading +12 rating on a team that missed the playoffs and showed 19 players with minus numbers.
“If you take that front (stats) sheet, we got a lot of minus minus individuals,” McLellan said. “He ends up at plus-12 plus-minus. When you got dash everything on your team and you look at two or three players that are on the plus side, he’s done something well on both sides of the docket.”
Edvinsson will report to the Swedish team in time to play in the pre-tournament Betano Games from May 1-4.
