Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman points to the 2023 Alex DeBrincat deal as evidence of his willingness to trade a first round pick if he can bring in a player who can help immediately.

DeBrincat has scored 66 goals since Yzerman acquired him from the Ottawa Senators for Dominik Kubalik (playing in Switzerland), a 2024 first round draft pick (since traded to Boston), minor leaguer Donovan Sebrango (two NHL games played) and a fourth-round pick in the upcoming 2025 draft.

” I feel very good about that move,” Yzerman said. “We’ve got an excellent player on our team. We’re prepared to use our draft picks, we’re prepared to use our prospects, we’re prepared to use any player for that matter in a trade that makes us better and helps us in our timeline to get better and ultimately be a team that not only can make the playoffs, but compete for a Stanley Cup.”
