The Grand Rapids Griffins were ousted from the AHL playoffs Friday, and a former member of the organization played a role in helping the Texas Stars get that accomplished

Former Griffins and Detroit Red Wings goalie Magnus Hellberg (2021-23) came on in relief in the third period and stopped all 18 Grand Rapids shots over the next 50-plus minutes to lift the Texas Stars to a 5-4 double-overtime win to complete a three-game sweep in the best-of-five series.

Grand Rapids had built a 4-1 lead against starting Texas goalie Remi Poirier (on 22 shots). Hellberg stopped four shots in third, as Texas rallied to tie, and then added eight saves in the first overtime and six in the second to earn the victory.

Cameron Hughes scored his second goal of the game, at 10:46 of the second OT period to end the Griffins’ season.

Sebastian Cossa made 44 saves for Grand Rapids, including 16 in the two OT periods. Amadeus Lombardi had a goal and an assist. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, Nate Danielson and Dominik Shine also scored for Grand Rapids.

Seen enough now Yzerman? So much for your “prospects” going through a long playoff run like you were harping about. Time for you to get to work. By the way, nobody wants to see Draper and Cleary pounding their chests at golf outings or pickleball tournaments. They should be standing ringside with other real scouts, around the globe searching for talent. Yeah yeah yeah, a handful of first rounders that were on every team’s draft board are on the team, that was simple. And by the way your pro scouting with your guys “learning on the job” is really impressive. Still can’t believe you said that. This is the NHL, not the ECHL where guys ” learn on the job.”
