Red Wings Swedes Get Better of Kasper
Sweden rallies to beat Austria

Detroit Red Wings center Marco Kasper thought he had shot his homeland to an historic triumph. Alas, it was not meant to be.
Kasper’s goal with seven minutes left in regulation time gave Austria a 2-1 lead over Sweden in Saturday’s action at the IIHF World Championship. It’s been 78 years since Austria took a point off Sweden at the worlds.

As it turns out, 78 years and counting. Sweden would rally for three goals over the game’s final two minutes to escape with a 4-2 victory.
“It’s very frustrating,” Kasper told Swedish website Aftonbladet.
With the loss, Austria dropped to 0-2 in the tournament. Finland beat the Austrians 2-1 on Friday.
“We are proud to represent Austria,” Kasper said. “We play really tough and tactically. It is difficult for Sweden and Finland to beat us.”
Sweden, which beat Slovakia and former Grand Rapids Griffins goalie Patrik Rybar 5-0 on Friday, is 2-0.

In Sweden’s win over Austria, Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond and defenseman Erik Gustafsson both drew assists. Raymond was named the player of the game for the Swedes. Detroit defenseman Simon Edvinsson is also playing for Sweden.
“They played a solid game,” Raymond said of the Austrians to IIHF.com. “They played with a lot of passion and pride, and they played it tight in the D-zone.
“Of course that third period comeback is something for us to build on.”
Red Wings Seider Also A Winner
His first game as captain of Germany’s national team couldn’t have gone much better for Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider. The Germans were rousing 6-1 winners over Hungary on Saturday.
Though he didn’t figure in the scoring, Seider skated a game-high 24:59. That was nearly eight minutes more ice time than any of his German teammates.
Canada blanked Slovenia 4-0. Red Wings equipment manager Paul Boyer is serving in the same role for the Canadian squad.
Red Wings prospect Eduards Tralmaks drew an assist in Latvia’s 4-1 win over France.
